But before assuming your key needs replacing, it’s worth establishing exactly what has happened. A genuinely lost key is one problem. A smart key that suddenly isn’t detected, a flat key-fob battery or a key locked inside the vehicle can be quite different.
I’ve lost my only car key. What should I do?
If you’ve searched the obvious places and there is no spare car key, give us a call with your:

Most importantly, tell us that you’ve lost the only key. This matters because making another key when you already have a working one can be different from an all-keys-lost car key replacement.

Can we make a new key without the original?
For many makes and models, yes. A modern car key can contain several components. There may be a mechanically cut blade, remote-control electronics and a transponder or smart-key system that communicates with the vehicle. If the car has an immobiliser, simply cutting a blade that fits the lock may not be enough to start the engine. The vehicle also needs to recognise an authorised key.
Our automotive service includes replacement transponder keys and work with car immobiliser systems. For many vehicles, we can also provide this service at the vehicle rather than requiring you to arrange transport simply because every key has been lost. The exact process depends on what you drive.
Lost car keys aren’t the same problem on every vehicle
This is where your vehicle make, model and year become important. The technology inside a Ford key can be quite different from a Toyota smart key, while systems can also change between two models from the same manufacturer. There are also situations where a key appears to have stopped working when the problem is actually a flat battery, interference or the way the vehicle is detecting the key.
Here are a few examples.
Ford keys and MyKey
If you need a Ford car key replacement, one feature worth knowing about on applicable vehicles is Ford MyKey. MyKey allows certain keys to be programmed with restrictions such as maximum speed settings, seatbelt reminders and audio-volume limits. Ford distinguishes these programmed MyKeys from unrestricted administrator keys. That distinction can matter if keys have been lost. Ford states that after the vehicle has been switched off, an administrator key is required to change or clear existing MyKey settings.
Not every Ford or lost-key situation involves MyKey, of course. But it is a good example of why Ford key cutting isn’t always simply a matter of reproducing the physical blade. When you contact us about a Ford, tell us the model, year and whether every key has been lost.
Holden Commodore key not working? It could be the battery
A key that appears dead is not always a key that needs complete replacement. On relevant Holden Commodore electronic keys, for example, there is a removable mechanical key that can be used to unlock the driver’s door if the transmitter or vehicle battery is flat. The physical door lock is concealed behind a cap on the driver’s door handle.
There is another useful quirk. Holden documents a procedure for starting relevant Commodores with a flat electronic-key battery by placing the key in a designated transmitter pocket before pressing the start button. So if you still have your Holden key but the buttons have suddenly stopped working, tell us that rather than assuming you need a complete Holden car key replacement. If the key really is lost, we can then establish what Holden key cutting and programming your particular model requires.
Hyundai smart key not detected?
Some Hyundai smart-key problems can look more serious than they are. On current Hyundai systems, the mechanical key and driver’s door key cylinder can be hidden. Hyundai documents a mechanical key inside the smart key and, on applicable vehicles, a concealed key cylinder behind a cover on the driver’s door handle.
Hyundai also lists several things that can interfere with smart-key operation, including nearby radio transmitters, mobile phones, another vehicle’s smart key, certain electronic devices, a discharged vehicle battery and, on applicable vehicles, metallic window tint. That means a Hyundai that suddenly says it cannot detect the key does not automatically need a new one.
If the key itself has genuinely disappeared, however, that’s a different situation and we can assess the Hyundai car key replacement, Hyundai key cutting and programming required for your model.
Kia smart keys can also suffer interference
Kia smart keys share some of the same practical quirks. Kia documents that smart-key operation can be affected by nearby radio transmitters, mobile phones and other vehicle smart keys. On relevant models, metal objects or another smart key close to the key can also interfere with immobiliser recognition and prevent the vehicle from starting.
Kia also provides a mechanical key within applicable smart keys so the vehicle can still be manually unlocked if the smart-key battery is discharged or the electronic function is not operating normally. So before assuming you need a complete Kia car key replacement, consider what the car is actually doing. Is the key completely lost, are the remote buttons dead, or is the vehicle saying it cannot detect the key? Those details help us narrow down what is required.
A Mazda with a flat key battery may still start
Mazda provides another useful example of why “my key doesn’t work” and “I’ve lost my key” should not be treated as the same problem. On applicable Mazda push-button-start vehicles, Mazda documents an emergency procedure that can allow the engine to be started when the key battery is dead. This involves touching the back of the key to the push-button start while following the specified starting procedure.
Mazda also warns that other immobiliser keys and some electronic devices close to the key can interfere with operation. Again, the distinction is useful: if your Mazda key is sitting in your hand but isn’t working, tell us. The solution may be different from replacing a key that is completely gone.
Toyota immobilisers and smart keys
Toyota’s security technology is another reason a replacement key can involve more than Toyota key cutting. Engine immobilisers are standard across all new Toyota vehicles. The system is designed so the engine cannot be started without an authorised key.
There is also an interesting feature on many newer Toyota smart keys. Most newer vehicles have motion-sensor smart keys that enter a battery-saving state after being left stationary. Communication resumes when movement is detected. Some older Toyota vehicles also have a manual battery-saving function for the smart-entry key. This behaviour can sometimes be mistaken for a smart-key problem if you’re unfamiliar with how the system works.
